You never know where your Penn State degree will take you but wherever it does, you can be sure that there will be Penn Staters wherever you go. Even all the way in Hollywood, California! Living there, is Valerie and Gary Werkheiser and their family filled with Penn State pride.
Valerie and Gary became friends at Penn State and eventually ended up getting married and starting a family. Their son Devon was interested in acting and so they moved across the country to California so he could pursue his dream. He landed a lead role in the Nickelodeon show “Ned’s Declassified” from 2004-2007. Now that her children are grown, Valerie currently works as a Assistant Production Accountant on the set of the hit ABC show, “Revenge”. Her job consists of paying the show’s bills for the wardrobe, set, props, etc.
Immediately when getting to California, the Werkheisers found where the Penn Staters were and how to get involved. They joined the Los Angeles Alumni Chapter and started “Lights. Camera. Cure.”, a hollywood dance marathon that benefits THON and the fight against pediatric cancer. (you can visit http://www.lightscameracure.com to find out more information about the event) Even out in California they show their Penn State Pride wherever they go!
Valerie’s advice to Penn State Alumni? Whatever city you end up in, always network with the local alumni group. They always post when there are jobs available and they help you network. Also don’t be afraid to take a job for experience, if nothing else it will help you figure out what you want to do. And last but not least do what makes you happy because if you are happy you’ll be successful.
